On behalf of Flora Filmtheater and Kunstmuseum Den Haag, First Cut has programmed a small selection of short films that you can see on 27th March as part of Flora’s takeover of KM@NIGHT.
Framing Power accompanies the opening of Can Love Be a Photograph with a selection of short films that question the influence of lens-based imagery on our perception of the body, the self, and social life. As Inez & Vinoodh push the boundaries between fashion photography and artistic practice, this film programme reflects on both the productive and destructive potentials of the camera. These films explore how the camera not only imposes idealised body images but can also be an emancipatory tool to challenge norms and societal expectations. Each film, in their own way, touches upon the themes of self-image, celebrity, identity and boundaries.

As our daily lives increasingly merge with our online presence, realities seem to blur. How do they influence each other, and how do they connect? The short film draws parallels between silent cinema and the editing style, attention span and algorithms of TikTok. The characters delve into relationship and self-improvement stereotypes. A girl trying to selfishly and spiritually get over a breakup, her loving friend (always by her side) helps her out with a lot of judgement.

Growing old as a woman is a tragedy. Without realising it, that’s what I’ve always thought and what I’ve always been taught. So how do I get rid of this stupid idea that’s so deeply rooted in my skull and in my society? At nearly thirty, it’s time for me to talk with women of other generations and tear down some anti-aging advertisements.

ENGLISH | NO SUBS | 9’ | 2020 | DIRS. JOSEFIN ARNELL & HELEN ANNA FLANAGAN
Four women meet for a picnic in the local rose garden. Friendship, physical bodies, and boundaries are challenged. What might seem like a civilized gathering at first slowly unbecomes.
